Victoria’s Tech Sector: A Bright Future with 400k Jobs Projected

Victoria’s technology workforce experienced a significant 9.75% growth in 2023, slightly outpacing the national average of 9%, according to the 2024 ACS Digital Pulse report.

Prepared annually by Deloitte Access Economics for the Australian Computer Society, the tenth edition of the report found more than 306,000 Victorians are now employed in tech-related roles, reinforcing the state’s position as a leader in digital innovation.

Key Findings:

  • Victoria’s technology workforce grew 9.75% in 2023

  • This growth was slightly greater than the national figure of 9%

  • Over 306,000 Victorians now work in technology roles

  • Digital Pulse forecasts more than 393,000 people will work in the Victorian tech sector by 2030

  • Since the first Digital Pulse report in 2015, Victoria’s tech workforce has grown by more than 70% from 180,000

The report predicts more than 393,000 people will be working in the Victorian technology sector by 2030, as the state continues to foster a thriving tech ecosystem.

Since the first Digital Pulse report in 2015, Victoria’s tech workforce has expanded by over 70%, growing from 180,000 to the current workforce. This impressive growth underscores the importance of technology in driving economic and industrial development across Victoria, from emerging startups to large-scale enterprises.

Dr. Rod Dilnutt, FACS, commented on the state’s progress, stating: “Victoria’s tech workforce has demonstrated exceptional growth over the past decade, and the future looks even brighter.

“The initiatives being implemented by the state government will ensure that our talent pipeline remains strong and competitive. These efforts will empower our tech professionals to drive innovation and help Victoria maintain its status as a global leader in technology.”

Nationally, the 2024 Digital Pulse report found Australia’s technology workforce continues to surge with over million people employed in IT roles across the nation. Despite this growth, Australia is lagging behind the world in terms of business AI adoption and the need for improved digital and cybersecurity skills remains pressing.

Other key points in the report include:

  • Australia’s tech workforce has grown over 60% during the last decade.

  • The nation will need 1.3million technology workers by 2030.

  • IT contributed $124bn in economic activity in FY 2023

  • Technology exports totalled $8bn last year, up 400% since 2014

  • Diversity still remains a problem for the sector, with only 29% of the workforce being female and boys being four times more likely than girls to consider a technology career.
