12 Signs You Run a Small Business (Whether You Like It or Not)

Running a small business changes you. Not in a dramatic, movie-montage way. More in a “why do I now own three label makers?” way.

If you’ve been at it longer than six months, you’ll recognise at least a few of these. If you recognise all twelve — congratulations. Or condolences. Probably both.

1. You’ve answered an email from the toilet

And you made it sound like you were at your desk. “Thanks for reaching out! Happy to help.” Professional. Composed. Seated.

2. “Quick question” fills you with dread

There is no such thing as a quick question. A quick question is a 40-minute phone call that ends with you agreeing to a discount you didn’t plan on giving.

3. Your weekend starts on Saturday afternoon. Sometimes.

Friday knock-off drinks? Lovely concept. You’ve heard about them.

4. You notice other businesses’ signage everywhere

You can’t just walk past a café anymore. You’re judging the font. Wondering about their rent. Mentally redesigning the menu board. Your partner has asked you to stop doing it out loud.

5. You’ve been your own IT department, HR department and cleaner — in one morning

Fixed the printer at 8am. Had a “let’s chat about expectations” talk at 10. Mopped the floor at 11:45. Billed nobody for any of it.

6. A customer said “I’ll tell all my friends about you” and you didn’t believe them

Then one actually did, and you nearly cried. Word of mouth is still the best marketing there is — and you know exactly how rare it is.

7. You’ve had at least one business name you’re now glad you didn’t use

Everyone has one. It was a pun. It was a great pun at 11pm. Your friend’s polite silence saved you.

8. You can do mental GST maths faster than a calculator

Someone says “$220” and your brain instantly whispers “$200 plus twenty.” It’s not a party trick, but you’ll do it at parties anyway.

9. Your phone camera roll is 60% receipts

Somewhere between the receipts, the stock photos and the “is this crack in the wall a problem?” photos, there’s a picture of your kids. You think.

10. “Holiday” means taking your laptop somewhere with a nicer view

You’ll “just check emails once a day.” You checked them before breakfast. And after. And during.

11. You get unreasonably excited about business stationery

A new invoice template. A fresh batch of business cards. A good pen. These are genuinely the highlights of your month, and you’re no longer embarrassed about it.

12. Despite everything, you wouldn’t go back

This is the one that matters. The long hours, the cash flow stress, the customer who wanted it “done yesterday” — and you’d still choose this over a job you don’t care about.

Because when a regular comes back, or a new customer finds you and loves what you do, or you look at something you built from nothing — there’s no feeling quite like it.

You’re not the only one

Here’s the thing about every item on this list: it’s funny because it’s shared. Every small business owner in Australia is fixing their own printer, chasing their own invoices and secretly loving a good label maker.

That’s a big part of why we built Small Business Connect. Running a business can feel lonely, but it doesn’t have to be. There are plenty of people who know exactly what a “quick question” really means.

So — how many did you get? Come and tell us in the community. Bonus points if you’ve got a thirteenth.
